Venice (July 30, 2010). "Healthcare meets Tourism": Concept decides real estate type

Don't miss the right moment

Munich (July 16, 2010). The boundaries marking the difference between a hotel offering medical services, private clinic offering hotel services and a public clinic with hospitality services are fluid. The greater the focus on medical services, the more expensive the investment. Siemens' Hospitality One identified eight different categories of medical and hospitality combination in one study which was cited at the "Healthcare meets Tourism" symposium in Munich two weeks ago. Case studies conducted by two successful health hotels showed how the offer must be shaped in this young niche. Investors remain cautious though: The market is still not transparent enough, though the potential is meanwhile huge. [ weiter ... ]

"Health Care meets Tourism" workshop: Cure destinations are perfect

Sensitising for a new market

Munich (July 9, 2010). The potential is tremendous but where are the investors? Health properties are promising reliable and stable yields; however, the scepticism concerning this new market segment remains high. One reason for this are lacking definitions and missing elaborate concepts, which can be focused either on tourism and guests or on hospitals and patients. Predestined for the establishment of health properties are, among others, health resorts and therapeutic spas. However, they have to do image work and raise awareness as well, just like the advocates of health properties. But the demographic development is playing into their hands in the meantime. The first workshop of the leading Austrian tourism consultancy Kohl & Partner in Germany attracted about 50 interested people from various industries last Monday. In the Hilton Munich Park, a lively discussion about the mixing of destinations and real estate, health and medical tourism took place. hospitalityInside.com was media partner of this premiere. The hybrid thinker will question everything in future and balance trends

Permanent changes in perspective

Berlin (July 9, 2010). Everything today is hybrid – from the car to the contract. And now, it seems, so too is the human being. He or she has become a hybrid thinker. After two decades of standardisation and controlling, the hybrid thinker finally puts paid to copycats and benchmark junkies. The future is concerned with the following question: Can things be seen and shaped differently in future? The new power is in seeing, feeling, smelling and forming, in questioning and redefining. David Bosshart, CEO of the Gottlieb Dudweiler Institute (GDI) in Zurich, and Robert Thiemann, Editor in Chief of the design magazine "Frame" in Amsterdam, attempted to describe the new ways of thinking whilst speaking at the Design Hotels "Future Forum" in Berlin. This turns almost everything on its head. [ weiter ... ]

Design Hotels' forum: Futurologists predicting wild years till 2020

A couple in bed with two Blackberries

Berlin (June 18, 2010). The years till 2020 will be as wild as teenage years. Therefore, trend researchers of the "Future Laboratory" in London are already talking about "Turbulent Teens". Last week, during the "Future Forum" of Design Hotels in Berlin, the researchers characterised the society's future in vivid descriptions and colourful pictures from which the trends of the hotel industry and tourism will also develop. This means, only lateral thinking is in, well-known mechanisms are being turned upside down and everything questioned. Internet and retail are connecting more closely and becoming pioneers at collecting customer desires. Working times and methods will become more flexible and the subject of environment will finally change travel behaviour. The audience listened three hours to a flood of trends. [ weiter ... ]

Medical wellness - dream and reality

Augsburg/Tettnang (May 28, 2010). Sustainable in the niche

Berlin (May 14, 2010). When Design Hotels host their "Future Forum" of "Hybrid Thinking" in the middle of June in Berlin, future prognoses will be the subject of discussion. ITB Hospitality Day: Tour operators have problems with individual needs

More or less one target group

Berlin (April 23, 2010). Is it possible to satisfy individual needs as a bulk tour operator? Organisers of the "ITB Hospitality Day" 2010, the fifth hotel conference of the ITB, made a real effort to accommodate focus groups, but rarely came up with consistent, authentic solutions. As host, Professor of Tourism, Karl Born, from the University of Applied Sciences (UAS) in Harz, was able to entice some statements from tour operators. [ weiter ... ]

ITB Hospitality Day: Talking Climate - Panelists put it into its context

Most important: the value chain

Berlin (April 9, 2010). The direct link between the tourism industry and climate change is clear. However before looking at the ways in which hotels can mitigate or adapt to this change as introduced by moderator Dr Andreas Walmsley, Course Leader Responsible Tourism and Hospitality at the International Centre for Responsible Tourism at Leeds Metropolitan University, it is useful to put the effect of tourism on climate change into context. The discussion "Climate Change: How do Hotels have to Adapt their Products?" touched different topics, e.g. the direct effects, winners and losers, labelling and transparency. [ weiter ... ]

ITB Hospitality Day: Innovation panel pleading a mental restart

Sit down and think

Berlin (March 26, 2010). When talking about innovation in almost any subject the immediate thought is to look at the influence of technology and within that broad term specifically the information technology revolution in which we live. Secondly, and especially in the physical world of the hotel environment, the effect of new designs, materials and building techniques would be considered of importance with respect to innovation. It is therefore with some credit and not a little bit of surprise that the panel discussing “Innovation: The prescription for bland hotels” at this year’s 5th "ITB Hospitality Day" during ITB Berlin barely touched on these topics preferring to focus more on the ‘software’ - the people that bring ideas to the business. CEO Panel at 5th ITB Hospitality Day: Why Wolfgang Neumann and David Fattal prefer expanding in difficult Western Europe

Fans of Powerhouse Germany

Berlin (March 19, 2010). One of them "discovered" Germany and the neighbouring countries as an ideal expansion field, the other one is concentrating again on this region. Nevertheless, David Fattal of Fattal Group/Leonardo Hotels, Tel Aviv/Berlin, and Wolfgang Neumann of Arabella Hospitality Group, Munich, have different motives. Both are managing hotel businesses, whose histories are firmly entwined with the real estate; however, their strategies are different in essential points. During the "CEO Panel" at the 5th "ITB Hospitality Day" last week in Berlin, host Maria Puetz-Willems and certified accountant Matthias Schroeder were able to obtain more details. [ weiter ... ]

For the fifth time, Messe Berlin and its hotel media partner hospitalityInside extend an invitation to the hotel conference. Getting a feeling for trends is free for ITB visitors and does not require any reservations. "Top knowledge for free" - the slogan of this year's ITB Convention - should come true. One of the panels at the ITB Hospitality Day is about "The Prescription for Bland Hotels". Innovations are necessary when hotels have already reduced their costs to zero but still have to maintain their turnover and keep the guests happy. [ weiter ... ]

5th ITB Hospitality Day: Tour operators discuss change in demand

Is there an individual all-inclusive package?

Berlin (February 26, 2010). Budget hotel today, luxury tomorrow. A chic dinner today, extreme climbing tomorrow. Individualisation has long become a fixed part of tourism and the hotel industry. How do the marketers of mass tourism adapt to this? How individual are their products? The two travel giants TUI and Thomas Cook and Oeger Tours, the special tour operator, will take part in the initial discussion at the fifth ITB hotel conference, the "ITB Hospitality Day". On Thursday, March 11, 2010, trade fair visitors can listen to this panel at any time of the day as well as to five other discussions without registration – and take a glimpse at market trends. With the 2nd ITB Asia in Singapore, MICE moves into focus

Here too: Quality before quantity

Singapore/Berlin (November 6, 2009). "Yes, it was right to start up the ITB Asia." Dr Martin Buck, Director of Messe Berlin (Singapore) doesn't regret the expensive decision to create an Asian offshoot of the world's biggest tourism trade fair. The second time the event took place, this time in the Singapore Suntec Convention Centre, just two weeks ago, management were able to show good results in spite of the economic crisis. On closer inspection though, movements on the market are reflected - as they are everywhere. The hotel industry was accordingly less well represented. Those taking part, however, praised the high quality of the meetings. In 2010, the trade fair organisers intend to return to growth. [ weiter ... ]

Enough capital but no financing - 7th IHC in Venice

Everywhere in Europe: Banks are the bottleneck

Venice (October 30, 2009). On the market, there is still enough capital and there are many excellent operators, but there are no banks willing to finance. Apparently, they form the "bottleneck" in most European states. At the 7th International Hotel Conference (IHC) in Venice last week, the panel discussions emphasised the key note of the statements made at the Expo Real in Munich before. Moreover, a discussion revealed the growing gap between real hoteliers who are able to do the maths (Moevenpick), and managers that have mutated pure controllers (Hilton). The bankers are only asking for one thing: collateral. According to some financial experts, the loss of value with respect to hotel real estate will continue until the middle of 2010. Until then, there are many bargains on the market. The mixture of the 300 participants of the conference reflected the changed economic situation too: For the first time, the consultants dominated the IHC. Only a couple of bankers and financiers had the courage to come to Venice, renowned chains, such as Starwood Hotels or Rezidor - long-year sponsors - were missing entirely. [ weiter ... ]

Impressions from Expo Real 2009 – An exploration through hospitality

Welcome to reality

Munich (October 9, 2009). Rationality and quality are back. The financial and economic crisis also has positive effects, as could be seen at Expo Real, Europe's leading commercial real estate fair, this week. The exhibition halls were well filled despite the crisis and some (city) stands made visitors marvel just at their size. Russian and Arabian exhibitors were obviously missing. There was general consent about the desire for content and clues in the current situation. Therefore, the Expo Real forums were well frequented. The "Hospitality Industry Dialogue" hotel conference was also happy about well-attended panel discussions, and the first networking event staged by hospitalityInside and Expo Real on Monday evening was subsequently a great success. The sign of the times points to those showing seriousness, competence and endurance. The only drop of bitterness: the investment speed has slowed down substantially – in the hospitality industry, too. [ weiter ... ]
